Call for Storytellers: Curated Personal Story Evening.

Submission Deadline Dec. 22, Show January 17

The Mopco Improv Theatre is launching a series of curated, themed personal story evenings, to be presented every other month on the third Friday at 8 PM. The first story evening theme is A Fork In The Road.

Stories should run from 7-9 minutes, and must be about actual events in the life of the storyteller. Interested storytellers should submit a short (300 words maximum) written summary of their personal story.  Accompanying the story summary should be a 100 word or less bio of the storyteller, to be used for promotion if their story is chosen, as well as a headshot (does not have to be a professional shot, but should be current and flattering.) Also, contact information including email and phone number.

Although many associate The Mopco with comedy, stories need not be funny. Kat Koppett, Mopco co-director, says “A good personal story for this evening will be an honest tale about a key moment in the life of the storyteller where they faced a critical choice about their future. The real life drama of learning and growth may be funny, tragic, or heartwarming–the key word is ‘real.’”

Submissions should be emailed to STORY@MOPCO.ORG with the subject line Story Submission by Dec 22 at noon. Storytellers who are cast (or perhaps chosen to move on to a phone telling of their story) will be informed within two days of their submission. The final roster of storytellers will be made public on January 3.
All storytellers cast will receive a $30 Mopco gift card and a free drink of their choice as an honorarium.

  • Marq

    Improv 101 for Adults

The basic skills of improvisational theatre are: spontaneity, listening, making your partner look good, and "yes, and" (building with what is present in the moment.)   Improv helps you  become more creative, more spontaneous, more open to change, and more tolerant of uncertainty. These attributes are identified as key to success in today's world.  Oh, and by the way-- our classes are huge fun, too!

  • Improv Fundamentals 1

    Improv Fundamentals 1

The fundamentals of improv are deceptively simple. You can learn them in a few hours. (But we warn you, it can take a lifetime to master them.) Improv is a practice that you can engage in onstage and off.

Support your partner. Listen. Blurt! Weave a fresh, engaging story out of thin air. Is improv comedy? Sometimes, sure. But more importantly, it’s connection.

For actors, writers, performers, and folks who have never performed.

Prerequisite: Improv 101 or equivalent (talk to us if you aren’t sure.)

  • Marq

    Improv Fundamentals 2

Continue the journey. Work with your partner to find the game. Find the characters, relationships, and stories that make great improvised scenes happen. Get out of your head and into the where!

Prerequisite: Fundamentals 1 or equivalent (talk to instructor)
